His name sounds like he is from another planet, or a brand of cologne or perfume. Instead, he turned out to be the richest man on earth, with an estimated net worth of $220 billion as of June 2022.
He is Elon Musk, a high-profile technology entrepreneur. Elon, now an indelible ink in the annals of technological history and today’s pop culture, is synonymous with the following:
- Tesla– Designs and manufactures electric vehicles, battery energy storage from home to grid-scale, solar panels and solar roof tiles, and related products and services. Tesla’s mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to Sustainable Energy.
- SolarCity- Supplies renewable electricity directly to homeowners, businesses, and government organizations. It has disrupted the traditional century-old energy industry paradigm of reliance on oil and coal which produce harmful greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.
- Space X- A commercial space flight company aiming to begin transporting people to Mars by 2025 and aspiring to make humanity a “multiplanetary species”.
- Neuralink- A neurotechnology company that develops implantable brain–machine interfaces.
- OpenAI- Conducts research in the field of AI with the purpose of promoting and developing friendly Artificial Intelligence that benefits humankind.
- The Boring Company- An infrastructure and tunnel construction company that facilitates underground transportation networks. It aims to create safe, fast-to-dig, and low-cost transportation, utility, and freight tunnels.
- PayPal– A company Elon founded, Paypal is a financial technology company running an online payments system which supports online money transfers and serves as an electronic alternative to traditional paper methods such as checks and money orders.
On the TV show Saturday Night Live last May 8, 2021, Musk revealed that he has Asperger’s syndrome, an autism spectrum disorder. “I’m actually making history tonight as the first person with Asperger’s to host SNL. Or at least the first person to admit it,” he said. How does neurodevelopment condition manifest itself? “I don’t always have a lot of intonation or variation in how I speak, which I’m told makes for great comedy,” Musk explained.
