Job Search Tips for Customer Service Professionals

No matter how well a company performs, much of how it is received by customers is determined by its Customer Service Professionals. Customer Service acts as the direct line of contact between consumers and corporations, making it an indispensable branch of any company. While there are tips and tricks anyone can use to develop their job hunting skills, there are also specific attributes that can bolster the experience of those searching for Customer Service positions.

Understanding What the Job Requires

Communication is at the heart of Customer Service, making it vital for those looking to enter this field. The term ‘communication’ itself is vague, encompassing a series of soft skills that must all come together to form a competent communicator.

  • Empathy is crucial when speaking to customers, especially in the likely scenario that they are dissatisfied with or confused by a service or product. A good Customer Service Professional is one that is able to act understanding in the face of criticism and make a customer feel heard.
  • Language skills are another key factor, both in terms of language fluency and the ability to convey ideas with clarity. Proficiency in English and Filipino are typically required within this line of work, so make sure to practice!
  • Active Listening is necessary to understand a customer’s issue and address it properly. Putting in the effort to really understand what a customer is saying will make them feel that they are putting their trust in the right hands and make a Customer Service Professional an incredibly valuable asset to their company.

Additionally, considering that Customer Service Professionals often have to juggle multiple responsibilities at once, multi-tasking, time management, and computer skills are all beneficial attributes as well.

Impressing Employers

Finding job opportunities has become easier thanks to the internet, with recruitment websites often posting several listings that make it easy to apply from the comfort of your home. However, this has also made competition steep as many competent candidates try for the same jobs. With this in mind, it is imperative that you know how to appeal to employers and stand out from the crowd.

Tailor Your Resume

When applying for Customer Service positions, your resume should emphasize the above mentioned skillset. Since the majority of the skills necessary for Customer Service positions are ‘soft skills,’ your resume should highlight your prior experience and showcase measurable results wherever possible to prove your adequacy to interested employers.

Be Prepared for Your Interview

While a job interview must be taken seriously regardless of what line of work one is in, for Customer Service workers, it acts as an opportunity to demonstrate your communication skills and affability. Before your interview, make sure to thoroughly prepare by practicing your speaking skills, going over commonly asked interview questions, and doing mock interviews. During the interview itself, it is especially important for you to speak with clarity, maintain eye contact, and make the interviewer feel engaged.

Do Your Research

It is recommended for applicants of any position to research the company they are applying to beforehand, but this is especially important for those looking to work in Customer Service. Since Customer Service Professionals are expected to offer support to customers, they must be highly knowledgeable in the company they are representing. Showing your employer that you are already interested in the company and the position can make you stand out as an especially strong candidate.

At its core, being a good Customer Service Professional is all about knowing how to be a good communicator. If you ensure that you know what good Customer Service means to you and are able to highlight those traits in yourself as you job hunt, you are sure to find success!
