Thailand recently hosted the 32nd Global Summit of Women, a major international gathering of women leaders and influencers from government and business sectors with 650 participants from over 50 countries in attendance, among whom was John Clements Consultants, Inc. President and CEO, Carol Dominguez. Held last June 23 to 25, 2022 in Bangkok, the location for this sort of event was certainly befitting, as Thailand ranks in the top tier of the 2021 Women Economic Global Gender Gap for Economic Participation and Opportunity, while Thai women make up 40% of chief executives and 34% of chief financial officers within Thai companies. The country also ranks first in the world for enrollment of women in higher education, with 1.41 women attending post-secondary institutions for every man (2021 WEF Global Gender Gap Report). Thai women were among the first women in Asia who were granted the right to vote in 1932, and Thai women also comprise 47% of the workforce—the highest percentage of women in the Asia Pacific region.
“Today is a great opportunity for Thailand to welcome, gain power and positive experiences from female leaders from around the world and from different sectors at this year’s Global Summit of Women. This summit will reflect women’s potential, competence, and power to drive the world towards a better and equal future, without leaving anyone behind,” said Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha in his welcome remarks.
With the theme “Women: Creating Opportunities in the New Reality”, the three-day event was led by industry experts and esteemed speakers that covered topics such as doing business in Thailand, global and regional mega trends, a fireside chat with IBM ASEAN leaders, social media and impact on the news, cryptocurrency and QBE, and a women CEO forum on how ESG informs business strategy. There were also mentoring sessions, and break-out sessions on effective virtual presentations and how to create connections.
In the aftermath, CEOs shared their respective learnings about the summit. Camelray MD Charrie Yulo said, “The importance of ESG is the success of a business. We should also adopt digitalization as the new order of business. We need to adapt to a multigenerational workforce. After the pandemic, we also need to adapt to a new way of doing business, with mental health and wellness issues as being important.” Meanwhile, AON Chairperson Marguerite Soteman’s takeaway from her mentoring session was that “sharing stories and experiences can help other women in paving their own path.”
