Emerging Voices in Today’s Youth Leadership

As one of the program managers for this year’s Youth for Leadership Summit held on October 20, 2023, I am compelled to express my deep appreciation for the students who devoted their time to participate in this annual event led by Professional Staffers, a division of John Clements Consultants, Inc.

My role at the summit was to cover Segment 1, themed “Emerging Voices: Unveiling Today’s Youth Dynamics.” It featured a remarkable lineup of panelists:

  • Jayson Lo, Creator of YOUnique Personalities, an Inspirational Speaker, and a renowned Best-Selling Author.
  • Maria Lourdes Velecina-Fabia, a Well-Being and Mental Health Advocate, a Positive Psychology expert, and an HR Practitioner.
  • Jaime Gonzalez Fernandez, a dynamic individual with a wealth of experience, co-founder of Pick-up Coffee, and BIGPAT Development.

The discussions during this segment focused on three critical aspects:

1) Youth’s Passion and Motivation

The panelists emphasized the importance of understanding and nurturing the youth’s passion and motivation. They discussed the significance of realizing one’s passion to stay motivated, highlighting that this realization is not bound by time. Instead, it requires dedication and readiness to seize opportunities as they arise.

2) Mental Health and Well-being

Mental health, especially for young people, was closely examined. The panelists stressed that mental health is closely tied to one’s relationships and that challenges are an inevitable part of our lives. They emphasized the need to prioritize well-being and mental health to present one’s best self in all aspects of life. Additionally, taking short breaks was discussed as an opportunity to recharge and enhance focus and creativity.

3) Leadership and Future Skills

The panelists also delved into the development of leadership and future skills. They underlined the dynamism of youth, which often leads to engagement in multiple events and interests, sometimes resulting in confusion about their true calling. In moments of burnout or frustration, revisiting personal stories and assessing new directions can help realign with core values.

The impact of social media on today’s youth, including the fear of judgment, the need for self-reliance, and the necessity for confidentiality, was recognized as a factor affecting mental wellness. The importance of cultivating self-worth, meaningful relationships, and maintaining good physical health for a positive mental state was emphasized.

The panel concluded that, in preparation for an ever-evolving future, there’s no specific skill set to develop; instead, it’s crucial to first identify what one wants to pursue. Balancing hard work and rest was seen as essential for long-term success and a fulfilling, healthy life. Being open to learning opportunities and enhancing communication, interpersonal, and human skills was identified as empowering young people to thrive in the ever-evolving leadership and societal dynamics.

The Youth for Leadership Summit provided valuable insights and inspiration for the future leaders of our world. It highlighted the importance of passion, mental well-being, and personal development in the journey toward leadership and success.
