Career Opportunities for Fresh Graduates

The pandemic made us look at the world from a unique perspective: it started with the basic consciousness of keeping our hands clean to keep ourselves healthy, then led to accelerating our adaptability to the new digital world to succeed. In the blink of an eye, companies pivoted their businesses digitally to ensure the reach of customers. Schools started online classes so as not to disrupt their year level. And sure enough, because of the new digital world, we are now at the forefront of graduates who are ready to face the corporate world with many available career opportunities for fresh graduates to conquer. The question is, are they equipped with the new skills that prospective employers need?

One of AMCHAM’s events explored the challenges and opportunities in the talent landscape– that there will be a big discrepancy between the shortness of skills needed by employers, as opposed to the skills learned by students from schools.

Growth in Technology

According to recent studies and forecasts, because of the accelerating growth in technology, the labor skills shortage will reach 4.3 million workers by 2030. Although it is not yet a thing to panic about today, colleges and universities should already re-think their present curricula and adapt to the skills of the future.

With the graduates facing the outside world, opportunities are still in the following sectors: IT and technology, Gaming industry, BPO (Business Process Outsourcing), Marketing and Research, Sales and Business Development, and Accounting and HR.

Opportunities in Start-Ups

In addition to these skilled sector industries, there are opportunities for opening a start-up business. Fresh graduates nowadays are more entrepreneurial, and they love exploring endless possibilities. Meanwhile, others prefer to acquire new skills and enroll in a skilled certificate education program to ensure they will land an excellent job at the company of their choice.

An example of a start-up that offers this kind of skills program is ESKWELABS, an online educational platform that is based in Singapore, and opened an office at the Asian Institute of Management. They offer 120 hours of Data Analytics and Data Science. This type of education produces skilled candidates for employers to capitalize on because of the technical demand needed to upgrade their businesses to go digital.

The great lockdown will continue to accelerate digitization and create new jobs within this decade. Our country is known as the top digital riser of this pandemic, and we should sustain this by having readily available talents produced by our educational system and the inexperienced players in online educational platforms. Schools must, if they have not already, pivot their programs and curricula to what companies require to prepare the students for the digital revolution. This is to ensure that fresh graduates are ready for any career opportunities that may come their way.
