A Roadmap to Committed Vision and Strategic Decisions
by Marshall Vianata

From December 13 to 15, 2006, PT John Clements Consultants Indonesia held a three-day workshop entitled A Roadmap to Committed Vision and Strategic Decisions.

Set at the end of 2006 to help prepare the participants for the end of the year and the challenges of 2007, the workshop was attended by bankers working for some of the top ten banks of Indonesia and some individuals from the information technology industry.

The workshop offers a unique framework on how the vision and mission of a company can be designed and approved by the stakeholders and securing the commitment of all the employees. A vision can be achieved by series of strategic decisions company stakeholders make and that should be communicated to all employees effectively. This workshop provides a new paradigm in the journey of designing the visions, misions and strategic decisions of a company, and how to execute them.

Case studies, panel and group discussions, as well as interactive participation are some of the methodologies applied in the three-day workshop. This ensures a thorough preparation for the process of designing a company’s vision, mission and strategic decisions, so they will not merely concepts. This method also allows participants some hands-on application, making it easier for them to apply the method in their own companies.

This workshop is mentored by Andi Mohammad Hatta, the President-Director of PT. John Clements Consultants Indonesia. He has 33 years of experience in various departments at Bank Niaga, with his last post as Vice CEO.

A Roadmap to Committed Vision and Strategic Decisions

The workshop involves six modules.

Strategic Planning Briefing, or Module 1, discusses the concepts of Vision, Mission and Company Values, as well as the necessary preparations for creating visions, missions, values and strategic decisions. Module 2, Scanning Future Environmental Pressure(s), highlights the early stages of the journey, analyzing surrounding pressures from various sectors, such as the local economy, and social, political and technological issues. Competition, evolution and structure were discussed in Module 3, entitled Scanning Future Industrial Pressure(s). The process of designing new visions, missions and company values is taken up in Module 4, Constructing Corporate Next Vision. The next module, Exercise on How to Get There, covers the guidelines needed to implement the vision, mission and strategic decisions made previously. Documentation in each stage is also crucial, and is covered as covered in Preparation toward Approved Strategic Planning Document.

Below is the Vision Development diagram:

Distilled Information, Visioning & Strategic Planning Processes is an information process developed by Mr. Hatta that divides a group of participants into smaller groups. These smaller groups are then asked to establish a consensus and to give their commitment to each stage of the visioning and planning process before proceeding to the next. Participants are grouped according to the categories mentioned in Module 2, and each group is expected to come up with a plan of action regarding their assigned issue, which can be anything from economic forces to political factors. The same method of dividing the participants into groups is applied to the other succeeding modules. This process of grouping the participants is designed to establish a consensus and get commitment from all the participants.

So far, the workshop has garnered several good reviews from its most recent crop of participants, with most of them commending PT John Clements for providing them with the right tools with which to design their own companies’ strategies.
