Harvard Business School Breaks New Ground
By Rizal Raoul Reyes

Take it from the experts. The Philippines needs to continuously develop a talent pool of managers to compete globally, cope with the growth in the economy, particularly in the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry, according to an executive of the Harvard Business School Publishing (HBSP)

Peter McAteer, HBSP vice president and managing director for corporate learning, said the biggest challenge the country faces right now is keeping up with the pace of growth. “As firms get bigger and have more diverse services, the leadership challenges also grow,” he said in a press briefing.

“One way to create sustainable growth is to continuously upgrade the skills of the talent pool through management and leadership training,” he added.

In response to this demand, HBSP announced that it has formed a partnership with John Clements Consultants, Inc. to provide the materials and content in training for Filipino managers and supervisors of the world-class management principles developed at Harvard.

Carol Dominguez, president and CEO of John Clements, said the in-class training materials provided by Harvard will surely provide the Filipino managers the skills that will enable them to compete globally. She stressed this will benefit the BPO sector, which has shown huge growth in the last half-decade.

“With escalating performance requirements, management and development programs are more critical than ever to help local BPOs meet the challenge of competitiveness,” she said.

Even though the companies have their internal programs, Dominguez said there is still an opportunity for John Clements and HBSP to market the management tools to the BPOs because they have expressed interest for these learning programs.

“They are so focused on the day-to-day operations and they’re so busy they have very little time on people development,” she said.

However, McAteer pointed out that the Harvard materials are not only limited to the BPO industry.

He said the offerings will be modified depending on the clients’ needs.

At present, HBSP and John Clements are currently offering eLearning services in performance support, facilitator design and training.

Specific eLearning products include Harvard ManageMentor, HBSP’s popular online performance support tool for management and leadership. Moreover, McAteer said HBSP are also offering a huge collection of case studies and training courses aimed at helping learning facilitators expand managerial skill sets.
