by Paul Catiang

Carol Dominguez, president and CEO of John Clements Consultants, spoke at the e-Services Philippines 2006 conference, held in the EDSA Shangri-La Hotel. Her presentation, delivered on February 17, 2006, discussed the challenges faced by those who need to bridge the gap between the manpower requirements of the BPO and IT-Enabled Services industries and the dwindling supply of qualified candidates.

Ms. Dominguez’s talk centered on the need for qualified candidates for the BPO industry, citing several training initiatives that are designed to train near-hires. Other projects she mentioned were those sponsored by John Clements, such as the Train the Teacher program, which trains English teachers in classroom methodologies that are more efficient than traditional teaching practices in improving students’ oral English proficiency. Lastly, Ms. Dominguez also stressed the need for changing the curriculum employed by most schools to better prepare their graduates for a successful career in the BPO industry.

e-Services Philippines is the country’s largest annual outsourcing conference and exhibition, which is organized by the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), and features major Philippine industry associations such as the Business Process Association of the Philippines (BPA/P), the Medical Transcription Industry Association of the Philippines (MTIAP), the Animation Council of the Philippines (ACP), the Philippine Software Industry Association (PSIA), and the Cebu and Davao Associations.
