A Home for PT. John Clements Indonesia – A Dream Come True
by Cyril G. de la Rama

Nine months from now, PT. John Clements Consultants Indonesia will have a new home, on that will comfortably house up to 25 people who make up the Jakarta, Indonesia affiliation of John Clements Consultants, Inc.

July 27, 2007 witnessed the ground breaking ceremonies that marked the beginning of the realization of this dream. Just five months ago, Mr. Andi Mohammad Hatta, was still heard to say that one day he will buy an office building for John Clements Indonesia, a one-stop-shop for recruitment, outsourcing, training and consultancy that he and his wife partly owned since 1993. For almost 14 years, the company has relocated 7 times. Mr. Hatta decided to put an end to all the moving. Thus, the search for the ideal place to purchase, either a building or a piece of land, was on and swiftly done with.

Just as quickly, a well-known and highly respected husband-and-wife team, G. Rooseno Aji of the D. Studio architectural firm, was hired to prepare the blueprint. And in less than a month, Mr. & Mrs. Hatta found themselves closing a deal with PT. Reka Mitra to execute the project. It was agreed that the contractor will finish the construction in 281 days, quite a challenging feat leading to having the last tile in place by April 30, 2008.

The property, 1,738 square meters big, is located in the Buncit area of South Jakarta. Shaped like a cul-de-sac, the two-way entrance dramatically opens to a wide rectangular space where three core building units will be built, the Main Office, the Guest House and the Multi-function Hall surrounding an ample parking space.

The Main Office will be a two-storey building with a total space of 593 square meters, big enough to fit 50 people comfortably. Aside from the executive offices, it will have two training rooms, a conference room, four interview rooms, a library, a cafeteria and a mushola. Connecting to the Main Office, by a bridge, is the Guest House, which is also a two-floor design, with a total space of 182 square meters. This wing will have four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a powder room and a common living room and kitchen. On the other hand, the Multi-Function Hall, which will stand right across the Guest House, will be a high-ceiling, all-glass showcase, providing 77 square meters of space, wide enough to hold multi-purpose activities. Finally, right in the center of this property, a parking space that can hold at least a dozen vehicles at one time, will also be provided.

When asked why he has to invest in a building for PT. John Clements, Mr. Hatta declares, “I have actually shared my dream to have our own office building with the late Mr. Dominguez and Cesar A. Averia, Jr. when these gentlemen were still actively managing PT. John Clements Consultants Indonesia back in 1995. I remember mentioning to them that having our office is a profitable investment if PT. John Clements really intends to permanently operate for a long time in Indonesia. Renting an office for an indefinite period of time would not be wise because of the nature of the business of PT. John Clements, where the cash flow revenue is not as fixed as the cost. Having our own office will give management, as well as the employees, stronger confidence in doing their daily activities and free them from worries like ‘packing off because of cash flow gap’. The idea was temporarily discontinued when Indonesia was under economic turbulence in 1997 to 2000. And thank God for giving us back the opportunity to realize it. A vision starts with a dream and will remain to be a dream until it is realized. To realize it, we need strong commitment, willingness to take risks, sacrifice and, most of all, a hand-in-hand effort to make it happen.”
