Unocal Philippines
As a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Union Oil Company
of California, Unocal Philippines serves as a supplier of electricity
to the National Power Corporation using geothermal energy harnessed
from its two geothermal plants in Mak-Ban and Tiwi.
For the past four years, Unocal Philippines has
outsourced the whole recruitment process to John Clements Consultants.
As a result, JCCI serves all of Unocal’s manpower requirements,
from contractual, rank and file up to managerial level positions.
Providing support to Unocal for this effort are three John Clements
divisions: Staffbuilders Asia, the Executive Search & Selection
Division, and Professional Staffers.
Manee Gayloa, Head of Employee Care and Manpower
Planning for Unocal Philippines, shares their company’s recruitment
needs. “The scope of the services JCCI provides to us is in
two major categories, he begins. “One is the outsourcing of
the recruitment administrative services where John Clements handles
the recruitment legwork and Unocal comes in during the final stage
of the hiring process. The second category is for John Clements
to provide us our requirement for clerical and administrative support
services and recruit for us all our manpower needs for direct hires
from contractual, rank and file to management positions.”
Today, Unocal employs over 400 people mostly composed of engineers
and skilled technicians, support staff from their head office in
Makati and steam field operations in Laguna and Albay.
He also foresees an increase in the requirements
for services from John Clements Consultants. “We’ve
just been acquired by Chevron, which is a giant multinational company,
and we’re now busy with integration efforts. We will definitely
need clerical and administrative support, which John Clements does
for us. Based on the latest merger with Chevron, there may be need
for more people within the next 2-3 years: engineers, technicians,
administrative staff.”
As an employer, Unocal offers very competitive
compensation package in the market.
The benefits of working for the company do not
stop with money, too. “If there’s anything I’m
proud of in working with Unocal is the vision and the mission that
we lived. It’s not only something that’s written on
paper, but most if not all of our employees continually strive to
live with our values of excellence, trust and integrity,”
Mr. Gayloa relates. “We value people at Unocal, and we live
by what we say.”
A good example of the company’s values and
sense of social responsibility are Unocal Philippines’ Community
Development Programs in Tiwi and Mak-Ban. Their objectives are to
serve as a vehicle by which UPI meets its social responsibilities
as corporate citizen of the communities where it operates; to promote
goodwill and appreciation of them company; to promote rapport and
close interaction with policy-makers and regulators on the various
levels of the local government structure; and to develop community
awareness on the nature of UPI’s operations and the health,
environment and safety risks associated with the same.
And through all of this, John Clements Consultants
will be there to ensure that Unocal Philippines gets the best people
to work for them. “We’ve come a long way partnering
with John Clements, and it’s been 4 years since we began,”
concludes Mr. Gayloa. “What I like about John Clements is
that aside from the fact that we’re dealing with professional
people, they are flexible and most, if not all of their staff are
really client-oriented. I think based on the feedback I’ve
been receiving from the project owners, so far, so good. With the
increasing work load I’m doing now, I can’t imagine
working without support from John Clements Consultants.”
